10.000 kilometers

Today I made a short trip with my velomobile to pass the 10.000 kilometer on my ODO !

I started commuting with my velomobile in the last week of October 2007, so I do about 1000 kilometers each month. see the velomobile-riders list at velomobile.nl

Skins

The text is wearing off, but they still keep doing what I expect them to do …. protecting my own skin !

Cycle Vision 2008

I made a short video of Cycle Vision which was being held last weekend.

The results are shown here.

I will dump the rest of all the material as a sort of camcorder-dump at google in parts, because it allows maximum only 10 minutes per video. But this dump will take some time….

EuroQuest

EuroQuest was travelling from Rotterdam to Belgium and asked us if it was possible to stay a night at our place. Of course , for a Quest rider we just make it possible !
For all details, take a look at his wonderful homepage

Cycle Vision 2008

I will be present at Cycle Vision in Sloten, the Netherlands. It will be held  during 21 and 22 June ( next weekend). I am planning to take some video and photos.

To give you an idea of what it’s like; see the video I made last year ……….

Welpie

It’s an advertising gadget that a well known Dutch company (Albert Heijn ) uses during the European Soccer Championship. see their advertisement-clip here.
With a little imagination you’re suppose to recognize the “Dutch Lion”.
As long as the Dutch soccer-eleven is in the race, I will have it attached on my velomobile ……..

Cycle Vision 2008

21 and 22 June I will visit Cycle Vision in Sloten (near Amsterdam, the Netherlands). I was there last year and made a video impression on this blog. I am planning to document some of the happening this year once again. If you’re able to be there ; be there ! You can find all the info here (English behind the flag)

I liked the next video of the 6 hour race at Victoria Park Adelaide. It looks like there is not a single Quest participating in this race ! Here in the Netherlands the Quest will form a majority among the race-machines.

I am impressed by the amount of public alongside the track. Of course there is much more open land and park in Australia, but I hope that Cycle Vision will find an equal sort of space somewhere in the Netherlands in the future. The race is more attractive for visitors when you’re able to follow each velomobile on the lap. By organising the races at a public park, the recumbentbikes and velomobiles will also be seen by coincidental passer-by. I think it is important that more and more people get used to the idea that recumbents are a “normal” presence in traffic !

Eastermeeting 2008

During Easter I went to the “Harskamperdennen”, a camping at the Veluwe where a lot of other recumbent cyclists were together for three nights. This year it was freezing cold and the weatherforecast said there would be snow-showers…….. We were lucky, because at the times we planned a visit to the museum on Saturday and a cycling tour on Sunday the weather was quite OK.

I made videos during the weekend and edited them to 26 minutes. It shows my impression of those days. There were made a lot of photos by other recumbent-cyclists, you can find them here .

fabulous people

We live in a world of economics. Everything is expressed in money. Even the time I watch television is of some worth to the advertising company’s. The medical health care, the lack of space on high ways during peak-hour, the seconds that it takes to prepare a McDonalds-menu, here in the Netherlands there even exists something weird as tourist-tax ! Everything is money these days ………..

Like in the Roman centuries there was a small village in Brittany (according to the Asterix & Obelix cartoons) that stayed to it’s own habits and values, there is a small bicycle-business in the center of the Netherlands which exists of just a few cyclists who don’t want to compete with the given order of bicycle-manufacturers……

They have cycling in their blood and brains and that is why they know what a cyclist wants and needs. So there are no brilliant advertisements, no dazzling showroom, no endlessly promising texts and no hollow words. They only want to produce the best velomobile and sell as many as fairly possible. The best evidence of this strategy is the way one of these guy’s did PBP. He cycled with his velomobile from Dronten to Paris, then finished like many other randonneurs the famous Paris-Brest-Paris (1250 km route) and cycled back to Dronten again afterwards (totally about 2600 km ) ! When you’re able to do such things, you’re able to understand the needs and thoughts of a long-distance cyclist.

I don’t know for sure, but I think he must have met Asterix or Obelix or maybe even King Arthur somewhere near the forests of Paimpont. Brittany has lots of history hidden in those forests and all ages have their own Quests…..

But anyway……….; yesterday I ordered two tyres………… they were delivered today ! Excellent service is what a simple cyclist needs…………..

Vredestein made an error on their label; 50-406 should be 40-406………

Velomobile.nl expects that their quality will spread from mouth to mouth, so please see this post as a mouth to mouth promotion and judge it as heard from someone who does not own any capital stock. I am just wildly enthusiastic about my Quest-velomobile and therefore I sometimes mis the shiny expensive advertisement videos that are usually made for inferior bikes…….. I know; it’s all money………….

Because one of the old HPV tyres was not usable anymore, I cut it in half. Just to see how it was put together……… This one showed only one layer of canvass and a very thin and narrow layer of protection.

The outer surface could make some more kilometers than the 4000 it did till now, but a strange sort of curve in the length of the tyre made it bubble. Unfortunately I was not able to show it on video.
