We spent a few days in the Achterhoek, the region where I was born and raised. Memories, memories, memories and beautiful nature!

The “halve haantjes” have been a well-known delicacy of Hotel Bakker since time immemorial.
In between we also went to Ermelo to visit the grave of my brother Johan.
and to Winterswijk to visit my sister …

My sister placed the portraits of our grandparents Johan Bijenhof and Heintje Barmentloo in a prominent place.

This flag has been generally accepted for several years now, as the flag of the Achterhoek
and also to the Boy Scout group, where I used to have fun … although the accommodation has been completely renewed.
and we also visited “Turf”, the former group leader of the Boy Scout who nowadays has a very luxurious tent for camping …
But only because of the typical Achterhoek scenic landscape I went back 50 years in mind … I feel that now as a “tourist” I see much more reason to make photos than someone who has stayed in the Achterhoek all his life. The region has its own character, which you only see and appreciate if you have not been there for a while.
Due to the corona crisis, many more Dutch people are going on holiday in their own country! We could see and hear them, there were many walking and cycling tourists … for people who like peace and simplicity it was almost too busy …

Bekend terrein, Wim. En ik snap het helemaal dat je opnieuw extra waardeert wat je vroeger gewoon vond. Misschien voor jou meer omdat de tegenstelling met het Zeeuwse landschap zo duidelijk is. Prachtige foto’s en je had er mooi wandel- en fotoweer bij.

Hetty, het viel mij op dat de oude foto’s van opa en oma er nog zo mooi uit zien … ze moeten toch al een dikke honderd jaar oud zijn … en ik vond het kleurverschil ook opvallend, het zal waarschijnlijk komen door ander fotopapier of chemicaliën … https://harwig.files.wordpress.com/2020/06/20200612-wimharwig.com-23.jpg Dat zou betekenen dat ze niet op dezelfde dag gemaakt zijn …

Ik heb niet zozeer op de kwaliteit van de oude foto’s gelet, Wim maar heb een hele tijd naar de uitdrukking in de gezichten gekeken. Opoes foto kende ik al maar die van opa Bijenhof had ik nog nooit gezien. Een rustige tevreden mens over het algemeen, alleen niet over ‘het geloof’ beginnen. Opoe was de spil van het gezin. Ze hebben het niet gemakkelijk gehad. In het begin van hun huwelijk 2 doodgeboren baby’s. Daarna Willem. Opoe raakte er zo van overstuur dat ze nog even opgenomen is geweest. Maar het was een warm gezin dat zal je moeder ook wel verteld hebben.

Hi Jeanie, they are my mother’s father and mother (my grandparents). They lived on a small farm in Vorden, called “de Haar” My grandfathers name was Johan Bijenhof and grandmother’s name was Heintje Barmentloo.
